What is Radon?

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency , radon is a naturally-occurring gas that is the second-leading cause of lung cancer to cigarettes. Radon gas is undetectable, and the only way to know about exposure levels is to perform appropriate tests. Radon, even at low levels, has been proven to cause lung cancer in those exposed to it over time.

The danger in radon exposure is that you can’t see it, taste it, or smell it, and you won’t have any symptoms to alert you. It does not cause immediate health symptoms — so there’s no way to know if you are at risk of radon. Radon causes over 20,000 deaths annually in the U.S., which is more than fires, falling, and drowning combined. It is also the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths after smoking.

Where does Radon come from?

Radon is produced by the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water. The differences in air pressure between the ground and your home allow radon to seep into your home through foundation cracks and other openings.

Radon can also be present in your well water, and that is why Southern Exposure USA also offers reliable water testing services as part of our home inspections to check if your drinking water is safe. However, your biggest risk comes from radon levels in your soil. It is essential that you hire an experienced professional home inspector to identify the levels of radon in your home for your and your family’s safety. We offer radon testing for residents in Burlington, Hillsborough, Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Mebane, Durham, NC, and all surrounding areas.

How Do You Know If You’re Being Exposed?

When it comes to radon, it is not enough to know that the house next door to yours has been tested as radon levels can vary from one building to the next. The only way to know if you have too much radon in your home is to test for it.

If you have your water tested and it indicates high radon levels, there are treatments that will remove radon from the water before it enters the home or at the tap.
